As it is said above a slice is a shot that starts off at the left, bang right, and finishes on the right of the hole. Mostly, a slice is caused by outside to in club path combined with an open clubface, which points to the right of the target technically. Such a shot puts a terrible clock-wise spin on the ball. Sometimes, the severity of a slice depends on the type of club; a slice caused by a driver would be terrible than a 7 iron.

How to fix a slice?

After all the things we learn we sometimes fall flat when it comes to alignment relative to the target. To fix a slice, make you have aligned yourself straight to the target. Avoid hitting the ball with an open clubface that combines with an outside to in swing path. Try to hit the ball with a squared clubface relative to the target. And finally, the grip; make sure your grip is not too strong or not too week.


A push is a type of shot that is very similar to the “Pull”. In pull, the ball starts left of the target and ends left. In push, the ball starts right and ends right of the target in a straight line. Like pull, there will not be any curve that occurs in this shot.

What causes a push shot?

Three likely reasons might cause a push shot. The first reason would be an open clubface mostly. An open clubface means, you are targeting a point at the right of your target, which is definitely unintentional. The second reason would be an inside to out swing path, which is also a way of aiming to the right of the target. The third reason would be the alignment. You might be aligning yourself right of the target.

How to fix a push shot?

A push shot is indeed a straight shot you are trying to make. Now, all you need to do is to avoid pushing it to the right. Try a squared clubface relative to the target. Next in the line is fixing the inside to out swing path. The final one is aligning you straight to the target. If all else fails, try targeting the left of the target, you might get the hole rather than a slice with your faulty hit.

Pull Hook:

A pull hook is a hook shot combined with a pull shot. In this shot, the ball starts left of the target and gradually curved further left of the target and ends there far left of the target or sometimes in some hazards.

What causes a Pull Hook?

A pull hook is literally a pull and a hook, which is caused by a closed clubface at impact. A closed clubface means that it pointing towards the left of the target, so the ball ends relative to the club path. However, when it comes to the swing path, three types of swings might cause this pull hook; they are out-to-in, in-to-out, or straight.

How to fix a Pull Hook?

This Glute Bridge workout is for those who can go with the squats because of bad hips.

Like the Goblet Squats, this Glute Bridge is specifically for the gluteus muscles. Along with the gluteus, this bridge workout would also help in maintaining the abs and burning out some fat from your belly.

How to do it?

Rest your body down facing upward. Bring your knees upwards and feet touching the ground (∠90° to be exact). Once you are in position, lift your center part of the body, the hip upwards towards the ceiling. Make sure, your shoulders and feet are touching the ground and holding your weight. Literally, you need to put your rest of the body between your shoulders and feet. Do ten reps. 2 or 3 times during the workout.

You can use a Swiss Ball/Physioball too: Everything goes by the above format in here too. However, instead of keeping your feet down to the floor, you are resting them on a Swiss ball.

Use your hands for more grip by resting your palms flat to the ground. Use the Swiss Ball only when you think you a little more height could bring a difference to your workout.

3. Lateral Lunges:

Do you know what keeps you on the ground standing after a powerful swing? It’s the balance in your legs, stability and strength in your hips. Without those three things, you would rather do a side flip with your club or get a sprain in your hips. Lateral Lunges is for developing Strength and stability in your hips and legs.

How to do it?

Remember, it is important to maintain your hip and knee alignment while doing these Lateral Lunges. Get your feet together and stand up straight at one end of your workout mat. Push out your hands together in front straight to your chest;

it’ll help your balance your posture while doing these Lateral Lunges. Now step your right leg to your right as far as you can and shit your while upper body weight to the right and balance it on your right hip. Keep your position for three to five seconds and get back to normal.

Now do the same with the left leg. Do these Lateral Lunges for 10 reps on each leg two or three times during your workout. Remember, don’t move your other leg, because that’s what you call lateral Lunges.

4. The Seated Rotation:

Seated rotation is one of the common workouts you can do anytime because it’s not confined to the gym or workout timing. Seated rotation is a rotational exercise which is done for increased torso mobility requirement. This particular exercise helps you maximize and improve bending, twisting, flexing and extending movement.

How to do it?

There are many ways you can do this seated rotation. Sometimes, this seated rotation doesn’t want you to be seated always. This is basically a warm up workout one can do on the go. Though the proper way of doing a seated rotation is by doing it while sitting, one can do this one standing too, when the hip hurts.

Better use a bench to sit up straight. Bring your knees together. Use a towel or any soft sponge-like thing to support your knee if it hurts. The upcoming steps can be done without any types of equipment but it’ll be better if you use one like a golf club, which can fit between the crooks of your elbows. There are two different ways of using the equipment.

Hold a club at your back with your elbow crooks. You can see your palms hanging free in the air, so pull them both and place them on your stomach. The other may be holding a club at your back slightly below your neck with your palms.

Once you get done with the club part, rotate your torso to the one side without giving a shit to your hips. Hold it for a couple of seconds and return back to the original position. Now do the same to the other side. Do 10 reps of seated rotation, I’m sure you’ll feel your bending and flexing getting better within a couple of weeks.

As we are done with the lower body, now we are about to deal with the upper one, the torso.

5. Cable Horizontal Rotation or Side wood Chop:

The Cable Horizontal Rotation otherwise knowns as the Side Wood Chop workout involve a resistant cable or a cable machine and heavy pulling. The main objective of this workout is to transverse abdominis muscles that involve in twisting of one’s waist. Along with the transverse abdominis muscles, this workout also concentrates on your arm strength. Strengthening the above muscles will help you swing your club by putting your whole weight rather than just the arms.

How to do it?

This workout will be effective if you choose to do it standing up straight beside the cable. Bring your hands upfront like 90 degrees holding the cable of a cable machine or a resistant cable. Now, with the help of your shoulder and upper body rotate your hands to pull the cable to the other side. Do 10 reps 2 or 3 times during your workout. Most of all, remember to keep your arms straight throughout this Cable Horizontal Rotation.

6. One Arm, One-Leg Dumbbell Shoulder Press:

One Arm, One-Leg Dumbbell Shoulder Press! Now that’s what I call the mouthful. This workout is for strengthening your shoulders, triceps, and abs together to maintain the tone of your body and improve your golf swings.

How to do it?

If you are new to weight lifting, for god’s sake stop showing off and, go with small dumbbells like 8-10 lbs. Stand up straight and lift a dumbbell with one hand. Let us consider you’re on your right arm with this workout. Bring the dumbbell next to your head and hold it; your arm should resemble a 90-degree angle.

Now, you are going to lift one of your legs and balance your whole body on it. You can choose to go with either of the legs. Lift your chosen leg slightly and hold it. Now raise and lower the dumbbell to the ceiling. Once you finish ten reps change the weight over to the other hand and other legs. Repeat the whole process 2 or 3 times.

7. The Bent Over Row:

If you have ever been to a power gym you might have seen some hardcore doing this workout with a stern face. No, you are not here to be a hardcore gymer, you are here to improve your health to improve your golf game.

The bent-over row involves either a dumbbell or barbell. This workout aims at a lot of muscles in your body. However, you primarily feel it on your upper back, biceps, and shoulders. This is a muscle-building exercise. So, you can use this one to show off.

How to do it?

Again I must remind you that if you are new to weight lifting, start with a small one like 10-20 lbs. This workout involves a couple of dumbbells or one barbell and a 45-degree bending.

Start with standing straight. Let us consider you made a smart choice and chose dumbbells. Lift one dumbbell with each hand and make a 45-degree bend through your hips. If you’re straining to keep those weights next to your hip, that’s not how the workout is done, bring it down straight to your chest facing the ground. If you see your weights clinging to each other, be a relationship spoiler here and, bring them apart to your shoulders’ wide.

Now lift both the weights simultaneously to the sides of your body without lifting the body back. You may look like an ostrich in this position and that’s the right posture of this workout. As a mantra for all workouts, do ten reps 2 or 3 times.

8. The Handwalks:

Have you ever heard of Golfer’s Elbow? That would be the worst injury ever happen to a golfer. Some common symptoms of a golfer’s elbow are stiffness in the elbow, pain and tenderness felt at the inner side of the elbow, tingling that radiates to the little finger, and weakness of the entire hand and wrist. How to do it?

Stand upright and I know that’s the first step of most of the workouts. Now bend forward and place your palms on the ground. Once you are all your fours walk with your hands first to a push-up position and then get your legs to walk up to your hands. Now do those 10 reps and 2 or 3 times. As I said, ‘it’s creepy’, better do this one when your dog is not around you.

Center contact is so important for golfers. It makes the shot feel great and it is where you optimize your distance. There are two problems that I see most amateur golfers have. They either hit the ball all over the club face or they hit the same area but it’s the wrong spot. If you are about 1 inch off of the center, you are losing about 10% of your distance.

You have to practice swinging faster to speed up your swing. If you are trying to get stronger, you have to increase the weight. The goal is to get you comfortable swinging the club faster and be able to hold your finish. Not swing out of control.

The goal for golfers is to have the shaft leaning more forward than when it started. Lots of golfers have their shaft leaning back at impact. This adds loft and also affects contact on the golf ball. Lots of tour players have a 7 iron and turn it into a 6 or 5 iron. Amateur golfers do the opposite, they take a 7 iron and turn it into a 8 or 9 iron. Just by improving your impact, you can gain distance without swinging any faster.

Having great footwork is really important to help gain distance. The ground is a huge power source for a lot of golfers. At the tour level, you have Justin Thomas, Phil Mickleson and Lexi Thompson who really used the ground for power. Kyle Berkshire, winner of the Long Drive Competition, utilizes the ground to generate power. You can watch how he works back into his right side, then back to his left and an upward push off of the ground to smack the ball.

Having a faster tempo can gain distance in your swing. Too often players are told to slow down. Swing slower. You can not gain distance swinging slower.

How fast does a golf ball travel when driven off the tee?

There are many different ways to measure how fast a golf ball travels. For the purpose of this article the focus will be the initial velocity of the ball after impact. Velocity is defined as the rate at which the golf ball changes its position.

Guidelines on Velocity

The USGA and The R&A (the European golf governing body) rule that the velocity of the golf ball shall not be greater than 250 ft. (76.2 m.) per second. 

Effects on Speed

There are several factors that can affect ball velocity. Club speed is a big contributor; however, hitting the sweet spot of the club is the most important factor. The material of the club and angle of approach can also produce varying ball speeds. Titanium offers the greatest increase to ball velocity.

Calculating Ball Velocity

To capture the velocity of the ball use this equation:

velocity = (clubhead speed x coefficient of restitution) / (1.0 + (mass of ball / mass of clubhead))

1.62 oz. is the weight of most golf balls.

Example of Velocity

With a 100-mph swing, using an 11-degree driver with .825 COR and 200 gram head weight, assuming a center hit the golf ball, velocity would be 148 mph.

Average Pro Speeds

When testing equipment, the USGA uses a swing speed of 109 mph to simulate a professionals swing speed. This results in a ball speed of around 180 mph. 

Velocity and Air Resistance and Gravity

The fastest velocity is just after impact. The golf ball will continue to lose speed until it reaches its peak height. The ball will then face a loss of momentum and spin rate due to air resistance and gravity.

Mastering The Swing Basics

The golf swing is a complex pattern of movement that begins with the golf ball and culminates in a motion similar to an arc above your head. The golf swing fundamentals consists of several main components for an effective swing:

What are the average distances for each golf club?

Golf rules dictate that you may only carry a maximum of 14 clubs for a round of golf. You will normally have a driver, a fairway wood or two, possibly a few hybrids, your irons, wedges, and a putter. What this means is that you have to understand each club in your arsenal and know the distance they can deliver.

The distance a golfer hits the various clubs will differ from player to player. The quality, weighting, loft, and other club factors will also play an important part.

On average, men hit further than women so we do make a distinction. There are obviously exceptions and men are often out-driven by skilled lady golfers.

The averages vary according to which report or study you look at but this is the approximate average for each club. It is important to note that these average distances relate to golfers with some experience so beginners are not likely to achieve these averages.

Should you carry a 5 wood or 3 hybrid golf club?

The great thing about technology today is that the golfer has plenty of options, but it can be a tough decision on which route to go. 

The standard golf bag used to be Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood and then a 3-PW with a SW and a putter. Now golfers have so many options between hybrids and the plenty of options available in the wedges between the 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60 degree wedges that golfers can plug and play with.

The majority of golfers should select the 3 hybrid. It provides great versatility both off the tee, out of the fairway and out of the rough. However, some golfers may still prefer the 5 wood for several reasons.  There are pros and cons to both clubs and the decision is ultimately based on the strengths and weaknesses of your game.

Top 3 Reasons to carry a 5 wood:

  • Easier to hit off of the tee.
  • May have a bigger yardage advantage.
  • Won’t hook as easy as the 3 hybrid.

Top 3 Reasons to carry a 3 hybrid:

  • Greater versatility out of the fairway and rough.
  • Potentially provides a higher lofted option.
  • Will be easier to hit a draw with.

Go Out and Test It Out:

Still undecided or even leaning towards a certain club. I would recommend to go out and test both clubs

Head to your local golf store that has a simulator or if you own a golf simulator studio and test both out. Items to watch for include club speed, ball speed, curve and spin rate. 

Be careful the spin rate isn’t too high.  The range should be between 3500 and 5500 on spin rate.  Anything more and you are losing distance and have too much on the spin rate for a club in this category. 

The most ideal is to find a friend that has a 3 hybrid or a quality 5 wood and test the different.  Try to hit at least 5-10 shots to get comfortable to see what is best for your game. 

How do I measure the length of a Golf Club?

If you often work with your own golf clubs, measuring their lengths accurately is extremely important.  It is a preliminary step in many club-making techniques, so be sure to get this right!

Measuring different types of golf clubs requires an understanding of what we are actually measuring.  In today’s terminology, the “length” of a golf club is not the length of the shaft, but the length of the shaft and the club-head combined.  Essentially, we are measuring from the sole (bottom) of the golf club (while it is sitting completely flat) to the end of the grip.

The first step in measuring a golf club is to rest the club completely flat on the ground. When I say “flat” I mean that the contact point of the club to the ground should be in the middle of the club’s sole.

In other words, neither the toe nor the heel of the club should be lifted in the air. The pictures below represent how you should rest the club against the yard stick while measuring.

Measure to the end of the grip, and this is your “effective length.”

However, there is no sure-fire way to measure the length of a putter due to all the different putter neck types.  Generally, you should measure your putter using the same method as above, except instead of placing the ruler at the heel of the putter, direct it through the center of the putter’s sole.

What is a good way to practice your golf swing in a backyard where you can’t actually hit balls?

There are some good ideas to help you play better golf and how to improve my game in your backyard.

1. Short game practice:

Most people have enough space to be able to chip some simple shots. Simply grab a bucket or a simple chipping golf net and set it up in the middle of the yard.  Hit shots from different distances, practicing with different clubs and lofts to find what you are most comfortable with. The great thing about having a quality short game is that it frees up your full swing and takes the pressure off.

2. Hitting into a net:

You want to make sure you have a quality net.  The goal here is to get a high number of repetitions in.  In order to get really good at golf, we must hit thousands of shots.

Having a net in your backyard and working on solid contract and start line is really important to improving in golf and can help you reach your full potential.

To take this to the next level, consider adding a launch monitor to your tools to improve.

3. Practice putting on a real green or artificial green:

In today’s golf world, there are synthetic greens that you can have installed, you can build an actual green with the right grass seed and mower, or you can buy just a strip of turf and utilize that in the yard.

The key is to practice those 3-10 footers and be able to groove a stroke that works for you.  There are many options and they can be costly, but finding a way to practice the putting at home is important!

4. Improve your tempo and rhythm:

Although swing speed is talked about more than ever before, many golfers won’t really know what theirs is. So, what might be considered a slower swing speed?

Finding a golf swing that works for you is one thing, but being able to repeat that swing on the golf course is quite another.

Many golfers mistakenly think they need to memorize what they did or feel exactly the same in order to re-create the same swing each time.

What really matters is understanding why you are swinging the way you want to swing, and then using this knowledge to create a repeatable swing that gets you results. This knowledge also makes it easier to fix problems with your swing as they crop up.

In order to create a swing you can easily repeat on the course, you must establish good swing habits that will help you remember the important aspects of your swing.

Place the tee in the ground and pretend this is the golf ball. Address the tee as you would a ball and then stop. Your left arm should be straight because that helps to maintain a straight swing path. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and lined up with your shoulders pointing at your target.

This will make sure the ball goes the direction you want it to go in. Your head is down looking at the ball to ensure proper contact, and your knees are flexed to help transfer power through the swing.

On your backswing, your tempo is even and the club should end up over your head parallel with the ground. Your knees and hips have turned back to help shift your weight back in your swing. Your left arm is still straight to help create that straight swing path. Your feet are still planted in the ground and have not moved. Your head is still looking down with your eyes focused on the tee as you prepare for the follow-through.

On contact, you are still looking at the tee as the clubhead makes contact with it. Your knees and hips are shifting to help put your weight and power into the shot. Both arms are straight and your shoulders are still on the same plane they were on when the swing started.

On your follow-through you do not bring your head up until after you have made contact. Your club has gone through the contact point and is now draped over your left shoulder with both hands still holding onto the club. Your knees and hips have powered through the ball, and the proper shift in weight has brought your right foot up off its heel and turned on its toes.

How important is the golf grip anyway?

How important is the golf grip anyway? To my surprise, it’s actually a vital part of the quality of a golfer’s game.

“Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game” The golfer’s grip is actually where the basic game begins. A weak and pliable grip will result in a weak and pliable swing. A grip that is too hard and stiff will produce a swing that is better suited for baseball than golf.

The first time anyone placed a golf club in my hand there was very little instruction on how to hold the club. I was taught how to lace my fingers in the right direction, but beyond that there was very little guidance.

I hung on tight and baseball whacked the ball straight up a hill and into the windshield of the instructor’s car. That is an honest and true story.

After that incident my golfing days were numbered. I had excellent power but absolutely no control. I was, incidentally, a fairly good baseball player.

Obtaining a Better Golf Grip “Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game”

Understanding the basics to a better golf grip can significantly lower your scores and best of all, improve your control.

Starting with the left hand, this hand is responsible for gripping the club handle. The fingers of the left hand begin the base grip.

This is of course aimed at right handed golfers. Those who are left handed golfers would switch the entire process to adjust to their predominant hand.

Most people have heard the analogy that you want to grip the golf club as though you are shaking hands with it. While it is a good analogy in getting people to reach for the club in the appropriate manner, “Correcting Your Golf Grip To Improve Your Game” there is a lot of play in that golfing advice.

Let’s add a more specific notion of shaking hands with the golf club and meeting the knuckles of your left middle joint of the forefinger reaching approximately two inches from the top of the club handle and the bottom three fingers approaching the base of the club.

The right hand is then going to join in on the action and take its grasp around the golf handle. The club handle should rest right at the knuckle/palm intersection of the hand. You don’t want the club to be too far toward the finger tips and you want the club to rest firmly toward the base of the fingers toward the hand.

Now you successfully have both hands on the club. Looking down at their position you should be able to find a V shape created by the thumb and forefinger on the left hand.

This V shape should have a direction. It should be aimed toward the right shoulder, pointing right about the middle of the shoulder to be precise. Adjust your grip until you have the club lying toward the base of your fingers toward the palm and the V shape of the left thumb and forefinger pointing directly toward the middle of the right shoulder.

This seems like an awkward position, but once you adjust the grip accordingly, it should actually have a mildly normal feel to it. Get comfortable with it and practice getting just those basics of the golf grip down without having to spend twenty minutes adjusting your grip every time you pick up a club. You should be able to get it to the point where this part of gripping the golf club is natural and automatic.

There should be a little flex to your left wrist. The wrist should take on a mild angle that resembles a “cupping” angle. Relax your wrists until you find that motion and angle.

The V shape that your right forefinger and thumb produce should be aimed up toward the right ear. All of these “aiming” suggestions are assuming that you are gripping the golf club in the stance you take just prior to swinging the golf club.

The palm of the right hand is basically responsible for the direction the ball will go once it is in the air. While you are standing their adjusting your grip on your golf club and finding the stance that works best for you, you want to keep in mind that your goal is to “aim” the golf ball with the palm of your right hand. This of course only works if your grip on the golf club is accurate and your hands mold together as one cohesive unit.

When gripping your golf club, you want your hands to be able to work together. Aside from that, you want your hands to work in sync with the rest of your body.

By developing a natural but distinct grip on the golf club you can encourage your entire body to work cohesively all the way through to the end of the golf club and produce a swing that will carry the ball both the distance and the direction you are aiming for.

Practice your swing often and carry your follow through all the way through your body. This will help eliminate chop shots that result from an uncomfortable grip on the golf club.

Spending a little time at the driving range is always a good idea when making even minor adjustments to your swing. Practicing the adjustments for the first time on the fairway with a bunch of golfing associates is typically a frustrating maneuver.
